Primary 6 — A Journey into Sustainable Textile Production at CHAT

April 2025

As part of Project T, a group of Primary 6 girls recently visited the CHAT (Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile) to explore sustainable practices in the textile industry. In the Spinning Factory, they learnt about the cotton spinning process and inspected the machines used in production. They discovered how raw cotton transforms through various stages into threads and yarns and explored vintage denim items, examining the relationship between textile development and environmental impact.

Additionally, the girls learnt about natural dyes, such as indigo and sappan wood, which help minimise pollution. A highlight of the visit was the workshop, where they created upcycled bracelets from fabric scraps. Overall, the experience significantly deepened their understanding of the benefits of sustainable textile production.
