Invitation to Hong Kong Budding Poets’ Society

To foster a culture of writing and appreciating literary works among the youth locally and internationally, the Gifted Education Section of the Education Bureau (EDB) established the Hong Kong Budding Poets’ Society (HKBPS) in September 2009 for the Hong Kong Budding Poets Award (HKBPA) winners to receive training and broaden their horizons in the variety and richness of English learning.  The following DGJS students who had been one of the top 60 award-winners of the HKBPA (2005-08) were invited to join the Society:

25 pupils from Pr. 6 participated in the Science in English Assessment.  3 students were awarded Certificates of High Distinction, 11 students were awarded Certificates of Distinction, and 9 students were awarded Certificates of Credit.

In the individual event of the “2010 Hong Kong & Macao Mathematical Olympiad Open Contest” organized by the Hong Kong Mathematical Olympiad Association, Jimsyn Jia (Pr. 4) was awarded Gold Honour in the Pr. 4 section.

In the preliminary round of the 2010 Hua Ha Cup Mathematics Competition organized by China Aoshuzhixing Teaching Research Association, Jimsyn Jia (Pr. 4) was awarded First Place Honour in the Pr. 4 section.

In the Mathematics Adventure Platform competition (Kowloon West), DGJS was one of the “Hong Kong Top 10 Schools with Outstanding Performance in Mathematics in 2009 – 2010”.

In the 6th Mathematics Creative Problem-Solving Competition for Primary Schools, DGJS was awarded the Bronze Prize in the preliminary round.  Members of the team were Vanessa Ma (Pr. 6), Jennifer Qiu (Pr. 6), Natalie Ting (Pr. 6) and Snowy Yuen (Pr. 6).

The Shakespeare4All 2009 gala performance of Julius Caesar was organized on 3rd October and 4th October at the Kwai Tsing Theatre Auditorium.  The four important roles, Casca, Portia, Octavius Caesar and Lucius, were played by our girls.  They worked with a team of drama professionals together with students from 16 other schools in staging this adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s plays.

The school annual production of the Shakespeare4All Drama Club was performed on 3rd July 2010 in the Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre.  All parents were cordially invited to watch the Shakespearean Play Twelfth Night, performed by Pr. 4 and 5 pupils.  The play was set in Suzhou, China.  The girls had all cherished the experience of performing in a theatre and  working with a team of professionals.  We would like to thank a parent for the sponsorship of costumes, and Miss R. Chu, our art teacher, for her great work in making the backdrop.

2009-2010 Hong Kong Budding Scientists Award

A triumphant achievement was set this year in the 2009-2010 Hong Kong Budding Scientists Awards organized by the Gifted Education Section of the Education Bureau as our team of budding scientists, Tse To and Laurice Wong (Pr.6), Christine Chan (Pr.5) and Ching Hou Yee (Pr.5) captured the “Champion, Best Presentation and Most Creative Proposal” awards for their project on “Noise Pollution in Schools: A Sole Solution”.  The girls worked on reducing noise pollution by finding alternative materials for the soles of school shoes.

Laurice Wong was awarded First Class Honour in the Science Knowledge Quiz.

Innovation Odyssey – Entrepreneurial Challenge 2010

In July 2010, Chan Wing Yu (Pr.4), Hosannah Pang (Pr.4), Anna Choi (Pr.4), Cheryl Lau (Pr.5) and Wong Hiu Ki (Pr.5) participated in the “ Innovation Odyssey – Entrepreneurial Challenge 2010” and attended a one-week intensive course at the Polytechnic University.   They explored how mathematical concepts and technology play a role in business and industries.  Over the course of the week, the girls were awarded five awards: one Best Design Award, three Most Creative Awards and one Best Analyst Award.  Mrs. D. Lau attended the course with the girls.

2009-2010 Hong Kong Youth Science Technology Invention Competition (Gifted  Young Scientists Workshop):

In March, eleven girls from primary four and five were awarded prizes in the 2009-2010 Hong Kong Youth Science Technology Invention Competition, organised by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association Science Innovation Centre. The girls’ projects were chosen amongst 6000 different participants.

Charlie Yep (Pr.4), Natalie Lam and Bernice Wong (Pr.4) were awarded 3rd runner-up for their investigation entitled “Weight Impact on Paper Plane’s Performance”.

Wong Jing Yu (Pr.4), Ryan Tseng and Stephanie Fong (Pr.4) were awarded a merit prize for their investigation on whether the size of the fish tank affected the growth rate of fish.

Michele Chan and Tse Yan Tung (Pr.5) were awarded a merit prize for their investigation on the best solution for the growth of bean sprouts.

Ching Hou Yee (Pr.5), Hazel Chan and Margaux Huey (Pr.5) were awarded a merit prize for their investigation on growing crystals in a solution.

The girls won trophies and scholarships. 
The School received the “Best Organization Award”.

Mass Mutual Junior Space Camp 2010

After three rounds of interviews organized by Mass Mutual Asia, Avala Ngan of Primary 4  was chosen as a Junior Astronaut out of 2000 competitors.  Together with her parent, Avala attended a fully subsidized training course at the United States Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama at the end of July, 2010.

Hong Kong Technology Education Promotion Scheme 2009-2010

In the Hong Kong Technology Education Promotion Scheme 2009-2010 organized by Lingnan Dr. Chung Wing Kwong Memorial Secondary School, 6 girls from our school entered a “Self-welded Motor Car Racing Competition” with the help of their parents.  They had to weld and assemble all the wires, resistors, sensors and circuit boards together to make a motor car. They had to learn how to adjust the resistance, the speed of the wheels and the distance between the light sensors to make the car stable in order to race along the provided track.  It was a wonderful opportunity for our girls to learn about mechanics. 

This year, besides the parent-child session, 4 teachers from our school also joined the competition for teachers.  Miss P. Chung was the 2nd-runner up.  Her self-welded motor car could finish the race in 21 seconds.  Miss E. Chan and Mrs. B. Lam were awarded merit prizes in the competition.  They received trophies for their efforts.

EatSmart@school.hk, (a territory-wide healthy eating campaign), launched by the Department of Health in 2009-10:   

Our School has surpassed basic level accreditation requirements and after an objective assessment, has met all applicable standards for advanced level accreditation in the provision of snacks and the provision of lunch.  The School is therefore accredited as a model of an “EatSmart School” by the Department of Health in appreciation of the School’s dedicated commitment to healthy-eating promotion.

Junior Dragon Ambassador Election 2010, sponsored by the City Junior Chamber:

Tse To of Pr. 6 and Sonia Chan of Pr. 5 were selected as two of the six representatives in the Junior Dragon Ambassador Election 2010 to participate in the 2010 Shanghai Expo in August to promote the positive metropolitan image of Hong Kong.
